This morning a young mother rose from her clean, rumpled sheets and walked into her baby’s bedroom. Smiling, she lifted the awakening infant and laid him on the changing table. She cleaned and bathed her baby, then sat in a rocking chair and nursed him while humming soft lullabyes.
What makes this scene so remarkable is that no one ever did those things for the mother when she was little. Left alone for hours in her crib, lying in her own waste, she never saw a nurturing face; never heard a lullabye.
So today she is doing something she never experienced. And, to me, that is just an eyelash short of miraculous.
