Those words from The Message translation of Exodus 22:28 really gave me pause yesterday as my Bible class teacher challenged us to think about how they would look if put into practice.
I got to thinking about the words of Christ and the apostles who were living under harsh, ungodly Roman rule. Not one time will you read about them complaining about the Roman leaders or encouraging people to overthrow them. The Apostle Paul explains why, “Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established.”
As I scroll through Facebook I am sometimes shocked and other times dismayed by the caustic and hateful words that are said about the President of the United States. Regardless of how one feels about his policies (and I for one disagree with many of them) what impression does it give non-Christians when followers of Christ spew out such vitriolic messages? And how does God view us when we speak with such hate about someone he has placed in authority?
If you ask me how God could allow godless people like Hitler, Mussolini, Saddam Hussein, or ISIS to rule over and brutalize a people, I have no answers, just like I don’t have answers for many of the ways of God. My duty though is to submit to His will and believe that He knows what is best.
